ScratchboardScratchboard is a contrasting art utilizing various small tools, such as scalpels, exacto knives, needle type tools, for removing the india ink surface layered over white clay on an archival 1/8" hardboard panel. A scratchboard artist exposes light instead of drawing or painting shadows as in other medium forms of art. There are thousands of fine detailed scratches layered upon layer to create the depth and tones. There then may be added colors and more black added with another layer being scratched afterwards to give even more tonal quality. Shar has a passion for this art because of this tonal depth and details that are created with the slow process to achieve the desired results. The scratchboards are archival UV protected with added protection of satin finish to prevent further scratching. It can be framed with or without glass.

SymbolismHer animal portraits and art create a story by adding various ethnic cultural symbols and/or mandalas. For her animal portraits she relys on the background, birthdate, breed, personality or any pertinent information to help her research. Shar then creates a design to reflect a story with the portrait. For general animal art, she also researches, species, geographic heritage, temperament and personality traits to add symbolism of various cultures around the world. Having such a love of Border Collies and connected with her own cultural background she has a strong influence with Celtic and Native American symbolism. She finds that much of the symbols of different cultures can be similar and be merged to create the full spirit of the animal. Shar immerses herself in her work with capturing the personality of each animal. Commissioned portraits are available in original only. Other works are available in limited edition Giclee or original.
